1. Rajkumar: Called as Amitabh Bachchan of south indian cinema, Dr. Rajkumar is perhaps the greatest actor of Kannada film industry. Born on 24th April 1928, he has actually lifted the entire Kannada film industry. He has started his career in 1954 with Kannada film Bedara Kannappa. He has won Dadasaheb Falke award, the greatest award in Indian cinema, in 1995. He is ten time winner of Filmfare South award in Best Actor category (a record sharing with Kamal Hassan and Mammootty), 11 Karnatka State Film awards and also been awarded as Padma Bhushan by government of India in 1983.

2. Shivaji Ganesan: Born on 1st October 1928, he is one of the most respectable artist of south indian cinema. Started his career in 1952 with a Tamil film Paraashakti, he has acted in over 300 films in various languages. He won two National Film awards, three Filmfare South awards and other several awards. He was the winner of Dadasaheb Falke award in 1997 and also awarded as Padma Bhushan by government of India in 1984.

3. Rajinikanth: Undoubtedly he is the greatest superstar of south film industry. Born on 12th December 1950, he has started his career in 1975 with Tamil film Apoorva Raagangal. He has worked in over 150 films in various language and he is also very popular in Bollywood. He has been paid 26 crore for his film Shivaji in 2007 and became the 2nd highest paid actor in Asia after Jackie Chan. In south india, he is actually the guarantee for super hit movies. He has won several awards including one Filmfare South award, ten Tamil Nadu State Film awards and many more. He has also awarded Padma Bhushan by government of India in 2000.

4. Chiranjeevi: Born on 22nd August 1955, he is the biggest Telugu actor and popularly known as Mega Star in Telugu cinema. He made his acting debut in 1978 through a Telugu movie Punadhirallu. He won nine Filmfare South awards, four Nandi awards and many more. He has been awarded as Padma Bhushan by government of India in 2006. Apart from his films, he is also very active in politics.

5. Kamal Hassan: If you are considering innovative and out of the box cinema, Kamal is all about the same and perhaps the most versatile actor in south. Born on 7th November 1954, he has started his career in 1959 in Tamil film Kalathur Kannamma as child actor. Recently he played ten different characters in his film Dashavataram. His awards list is long with four National Film awards, two Filmfare awards, 17 Filmfare South awards (more than any other actor), three Nandi awards, nine Tamil Nadu State Film awards and many more. He has also been awarded as Padm Shri by government of Indian in 1990.

6. Mohanlal: Born on 21th May 1960, Mohanlal has started his career in 1978 with Malayalam film Thiranottam but that film was never released. He has acted in over 300 films in various languages but in Malayalam film industry, he is next to nobody. He has won several awards including four National Film awards, nine Kerala State Film awards, nine Filmfare South awards and more. He has also awarded as Padma Shri by government of India in 2001.

7. Mammootty: A leading actor from Malayalam cinema, Mammootty is born on 7th September 1951. Started his career in 1971 in a Malayalam film Anubhavangal Paalichakal, he has acted in over 360 movies in various languages. He has won three National Film awards (all are for best actor category which is a record share with Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Hassan), seven Kerala State Film awards, 11 Filmfare South awards and more. He has also awarded with Padmshri by government of India in 1998.

8. Vishnuvardhan: After Rajkumar if anyone has contributed the most in Kannada film industry, that is Dr. Vishnuvardhana without any doubt. Started his career in 1972 with a Kannada film Vamshavruksha, he has acted in 220 films out of which 200 are in Kannada language. He won 8 Filmfare South awards (seven are for best actor), seven Karnataka State Film awards and several other awards.

9. Nagarjuna: Another popular film star from Telugu film industry, Nagarjuna was born on 29th August 1959. He has started his career in 1967 with a Telugu film Sudigundalu as child artist. He has acted in over 80 films in various languages and he is also very popular in Bollywood. He has won two National Film awards, six Nandi awards and three Filmfare South awards.

10. Venkatesh: Born on 13th December 1960, Venkatesh is one of the lead actors in Telugu cinema. Started his career in 1971 with Telugu film Prem Nagar, he has acted in over 70 films in various languages. He has also appeared in several Bollywood movies and been appreciated for his performance in K. Murali Mohan Rao's Anari. He won seven Nandi awards and four Filmfare South awards.

dunno most of them lol because I am not really a big fan of South Indian movies, but I know Rajnikanth well he is one of the best actors I have ever seen in movies. And of course no doubt he is huge superstar in South India.

when you count acting it's Dr.Rajkumar the bestest... Even MGR, NTR, SHIVAJI GANESHAN are best too. But no one can beat the flexibility of Dr. Rajkumar.. Even all the top actors have agreed this one...

And stylewise u ve no name other than Rajinikanth.. but infact he started to make style by seeing movies of Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, and Ambrish (All are from kannada film indutry) which he agrees himself..

Its totally true that no one can match the status of Mr. Rajkumar in south film industry and this is also true that if you consider the commercial success, Rajinikanth is the best.

Films like Mayura, Ondu muttina kathe, kaviratna kalidasa, sandhyaraaga, Bangarada manushya (many more to count upon) prove the versatality of Rajkumar as an actor and Jeevanachaitra, Halujenu, Babruvahana proving him as a versatile singer!

Dr. Raj is "the best actor" of Indian cinema. since he acted only in Kannada cinem, ofcourse he had a cause for that, his acting talent didn't get the recogntion which deserved. I would like to share this with U all, Prithviraj Kapoor (Legndry Raj Kapoor's father) was very much interested to act with Dr.Raj but Annavru acts only in Kannada movies, Prithviraj Kapoor himself came to Kannada film Industry & acted with him in "Sakshatkara" movie.

MGR should have come at the top followed by NTR. Dr.Raj Kumar is not universally popular in Karnataka. For e.g. he was not quite popular in Tulu Nadu region. Another notable omission is Prem Nazir. In Kerala, he is next only to Mohanlal in popularity, even ahead of Mammootty.

Dr Raj Undoubtly the Greatest actor of all time. But sad thing is that, his films was confined only to Karnataka region.

To Make it very simple, in 1950's there were 4 actors who rulled the south cinemas. DR Raj, NTR, MGR and Shivaji Ganesan. Since Telugu and Tamil Cinemas had greator exposure interms of screening outside its geographical region also MGR, NTR and Shivaji Might be more popular than Dr Raj.

But if you purely comparing in terms of Acting capabilities, Its Undoubltely Dr Rajkumar who beats others with greator margin.

As someone pointed out,Dr Raj was best in every possible roles that an lead male actor can do.

As Name says, Dr Raj is the Raja(King) of Acting.

He is the only actor who acted in the lead Male Role even at the age of 70+ years in the last movie (shabdhavedi).

Through out his career from 1955 till 2000 (his last movie got released in 2000, movie name shabdhavedi), he has acted in almost 206 movies as a lead male actor with wide variety of roles.

And he is the only Actor to my knowledge other than Kishore kumar was a successful actor cum singer. Even though kishore kumar was more successful as a singer rather than actor. But Raj was 100% super successful in both singing and acting. One Man with Multiple dimension.

I wish Raj would have acted in all Indian languages and wish every indian would have enjoyed his acting.

Dr raj is the best actor of all time..he acted in all types of role...his dialogue delivery style,prounciation of kannada,the mannerism that he was showing for each and every role is simply uncomparable..kaviratna kalidasa is the one movie wr we can come to know his versatile actin ability as a small example..he deserved oscar award atleast 10 times

The list consists of great actors of all time in Indian Cinema. Undoubtedly it is DR.RAJKUMAR, the best actor cum singer of Indian Cinema. It is wrong to compare him to Amitabh because DR.RAJ is the only Indian actor who never acted in any of the roles which portrays negative message to society eg.smoking, drinking & slang dialogues which was followed throughtout his film & personal life. Dr.Raj gained highest award 'Dadasaheb Phalke' in 1995 which was earlier than Shivaji Ganeshan but Amitabh do not have it. As Amitabh & Rajkumar themselves accepted that they are the followers of Dr.Raj.

The order should have included the other best actors of all time namely; NTR, MGR after Dr.Raj also Shankar Nag who directed Malgudi days. The actors like Vikram(Tamil) & Upendra should be included instead Nagarjuna & Venkatesh in terms of reputation, acting, skills, etc. Rajinikanth is known for his style and success in terms of commercial but not acting. Actingwise there is nobody who can stand anywhere near the great Shivaji Ganesan [the most stylish. Who can forget his role in Gowravam as barister Rajnikanth a name that Superstar Rajinikant took] and Kamalji, a versatile actor, a dancer, choreographer, producer,Director and excels in anything he takes up. And collectionwise I dont think anyone can match Rajni and Vijay.

Rajkumar is the best be it acting or singing.
What stands out in the list is that Rajkumar is the only singer. Thats one of the rarest in the world, acting coupled with best singing talent. Dr Rajkumar's success is the highest from the list. You are like a frog in a well. Films of Tamil, Hindi and some other languages are being released abroad. Hence the actors you have mentioned may be popular internationally. Dr. Rajkumar is also internationally well known and has won Award of USA. The actors you have cited may be international actors, but the real international best actor is Dr. Rajkumar. You just forget your region, state, caste, language, color, country etc., etc., and see the legend of legends Dr. Rajkumar's films, you or anybody for that matter will agree that, Dr. Rajkumar is the WORLD'S BEST. Dr. Rajkumar is not only a great actor, he is a great singer and humanbeing.

Can you give a proof or reference. As far as I know his first movie is Apoorva Ragangal,which is a Tamil movie which is directed by Balachander and hero of the movie is Kamal.

I can understand why the author exclude MGR & NTR, bcoz they are most successfull, and their industries (Tamil & Telugu) got more reach and got superior success than any other legends. The author does not want to bring his legend down to anybody, but at the same time success of MGR & NTR can not be rated next to any one in the cinema history even if the Hindi cinema is included.
2. Rajkumar & Shivaji
Both Rajkumar & shivaji got superior skills in acting, and have given massive hits. Even MGR have accepted the skills of Shivaji is superior to him. But the success of MGR & NTR is unparalleled. If Rajkumar is in Tamil or Telugu industry, the story might be different. But the fact is he was in the smaller industry, and hence i would rate him equal to Shivaji.

I agree with all his rating which is mixture of class performance and mass success. So I agree with Vishnu vardhan though I know nothing about him. I am much aware of Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam Industry. Not much into kannada.

It is always questionable, who is best Mammooty or Mohanlal. Both are competing in mass as well as class. Personally I would rate him above or equal to Mohanlal. Since the margin is negligible, I would accept both cases.

As we are rating MGR & NTR rating above Rajkumar, Rajinikanth & Chijarnjeevi above Kamal Hassan, the mass success of other legends are not superior to the success level of Nagarjun & Vengatesh. But i go Dr.raj is First in acting & also popularity! i didnt seen anywhere r heard this kind of fan following n love towards him....... he deserves everything which d actor shuld deserve. And second his legend shivaji ganesan he also ultimate actor who desrves second place after rajkumar ji!! But dont think that Ntr N MGR is good actors, they are only stylish actors they not got acting skills like other who were in there generation.......they both popular in politics n in that they deserve what they have to be.....both are amazing politicians......And kamal is also not behind he is also Excellent Actor ............

Good list. Mgr and ntr should replace nagarjuna and venkatesh. I have seen only 2 or 3 epic movies of Rajkumar. I think He is good enough to be at 1.

mammooty got 3 national awards which was a record share with amithab and kamal.mohan lal got 2 national awards.then how can chiranjeevi and vishnuvardan ahead of these two's

Thalivar Kamal always rock. If he would have acted all the mass movies in the past he would have beat rajini now. Rajini Muthu is average movie... But i do not know how it reached overseas. Also Shivaji and Endhiran got hit due big director, Famous Herione and AR rahman with Rajini Mass....Kamal Indian also got big hit... but unfortuantely it released 1996. All the famous kamal movies like Nayagan, anbesivam, devarmagan, michael madana kamarajan, indian, Appu Raja......sathya...by bad luck are released before 2005...hmmm his bad luck. unfortunately he missed working shankar for Endiran movie..Due to that still he behind that Rajini....Let's see Kamal's VISWAROOPAM

Rajni's acting debut was in a kannada movie by name "kathaa sangama" directed by Sri. Puttanna Kanagal, wherein he plays a small role.

It is stupid to say "Rajkumar was Amitabh of South India". No one can come closer to Rajkumar in versatality. And also why do you consider Hindi industry as the reference for any comparison? All the industries are parallel.

I dont think we should rank the actors based on their national awards and Dada Saheb Palke... We know that it was given to great actors like Dilip Kumar and Shivaji Ganeshan in the past but now the recent one was given to Rani Mukherjee. Its not that she is bad, but she is not a legend like the others... Aamir Khan was given Padma Bhushan the very next year after giving him Padma Shri... Arjun Rampal got a National award for Rock On... In that case, Vishnuvardhan has to atleast get 10 National awards... The fact is that when his first film Naagarahaavu released it created so much news and became the biggest hit of the industry running for 100 days in main theaters of Bangalore... People got scared that Vishnuvardhan will become a big star in future if he has done so much in his very first movie... so people tortured him and his family with threatening calls and threw stones at his father's dead body when taking the body to the crematorium... people threw chilli powder in the theater on Vishnuvardhan's fans so that they all fear to go to theaters to watch his films...None of the politicians refered his name for any kind of awards like Padma Shree/ Padma Bhushan...People hit him with stones one day in Bangalore, when Ravichandran's father (Producer) Veeraswamy took him to a lodge and arranged a doctor to treat him... After so much of humiliation he still stayed in the Kannada industry which is filled with politics, and worked hard to make name and fame in the same industry and succeeded... Even today the second name taken by everyone in the industry is Vishnuvardhan, though he is 21 years younger to Rajkumar and entered the industry 18 years after Rajkumar... Acting can be thought to anyone and anyone can get better with practice...Being a huge star who has acted with hundreds of heroins, and experiencing success on that level, and having not even a single black mark on misbehaving or having an affair with a heroine or marrying more than one woman... that is something which cannot be achieved by everyone in any industry... Hats off to Dr.Vishnuvardhan...

Along with acting, Indian actors have a huge responsibility of being a good human being on screen and off screen. Of course the onscreen part with be taken care by his director and many others who work to make good films, however when it comes to off screen the actor/ celebrity has to take care of his own stuff such as the words he use or his body language or basically his behavior. The fans always tend to follow their favorite stars and try to prove that whatever their star do is correct. Unfortunately many of our stars do not keep such things up to the mark. People loose faith in their favorite stars when they get caught in front of the media for having affairs with their co-stars, having a secret second wife, divorcing the present wife to marry another co-star, drinking, drink and drive, making accidents, consuming drugs..etc.

On behalf of all these things happening around there was one great superstar in South India who was not only a hero on screen but also a hero off screen... and that is our one and only Dr.Vishnuvardhan... Not only behaving and respecting his heroins, directors, producers, he gave the same respect to his makeup dada, technicians, spot dada kind of people (basically he respected humanity)... One big salaam to this great personality...

Tamil and malayalam in 90's and 2000's have seen the emergence of great actors and stars like Ajith,Vikram,Vijay,Surya,Parthiban,Sureshgopi,Dileep,Kunchakko Boban,Prithviraj,Indrajith,Jayasurya...while kannada has Shivaraj Kumar,Ramesh,Sudeep,Darshan,Puneeth,Ganesh,Vijay...Telugu has brought Pavan Kalyan,Junior NTR,Prabhas,MaheshBabu,Allu Arjun,Ramcharantheja,Naga Chaithanya...etc..there have been great character actors like M.N.Nambiar,Balakrishna,Nagesh,Tilakan,Narasimharaju etc..
I am a kannadiga but I watch all south indian movies...don't fight as to who is great.
Their greatness is written their graves and not beyond.

hey i give some information that someone don't know.
all cine industries including hindi will have to take 20 years to reach the thinking,tightness of kannada movies upto 1990-95. So there arise many Superstars like RajKumar,VishnuVardhan,Ambarish,Shankar Nag,Ananth Nag,Shiv Rajkumar,Ravichandran........so many to list. Also among heroines Bharathi, SarojaDevi,Lakshmi(No.1),Kalpana, Malashri....countless(sorry unable to type all hit heroines). But now due to selfishness of industry people, kannada movies loss its glory. it is very immature for not allowing people to see tamil and telugu movies in Kannada language.

once he went to thirupathi the pradhan archak bring him inside to the temple in front of venkateshwara and told them to him to sing a song, he sung one sthotra, after completing his song, the pradana archak told to him u r the second person to come here and sing a song in front of venkateshwara After Latha Mangeshkar.

Dr.Vishnuvardhan got selected amongst 500 people to get through the screening and act in the lead role of Naagarahaavu (Without having to go through & complete a diploma course in film acting or anything as such)..... I remember people from the film industry (South India) comparing Rajkumar to John Wayne of Holywood. I guess, the comparison was because of his macho looks, tough voice and great acting skills. I thought it was the best compliment for great actor rather than comparing with Amitabh (all due respect).

Kannada film Satya Harishchandra (1965) was mostly shot in AVM studio in Madras(Now Chennai). It was reported that Telugu stalwart NTR was very keen to make the movie in Telugu with Rajkumar in the lead role after seeing him acting with finese one of the scenes at the studio. But was refused by Rajkumar later as he didn't show interest to act in any language other than Kannada. Later it was made into Telugu by K V Reddy with NTR in the lead role same year but film didn't do well at the box-office. That was the greatness of Rajkumar during that period. This is an excellent ranking. But leaving MGR,NTR makes some what incomplete.Leaving nagarjuna,venkatesh and adding these two in second and third place consecutively after first place of RajKumar makes the list 100% accurate.

why u mentioned vishnuvardhan he is not great actor and popular as which been mentioned in this list there should be ntr and anr no body knows vishnuvardhan even he is not big star in his own state there should be ambrish who is great he is most famous than vishnuvardhan

it is because of our Kannada directors & producers who always prefer and make remake of other language films that people in Karnataka are seeing other language films and making them popular. When Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan and Shankar Nag kind of stars were making movies, film makers from other industries were waiting to buy the remake rights and making them in their language. Nowadays when we see a poster of a new movie people start guessing which movie remake is this... but this does not affect the other industries.. Salman is remaking so many south Indian movie remakes and they are becoming bigger hits than the original... its because no one in Mumbai watches Telugu or Tamil movies.. so they are new movies for them... but in our case its different... Kannadigas had watched Porki in three different languages... First Telugu, then Tamil and finally in Hindi... When the same movie came in Kannada with the same dialogues for the forth time... People got frustrated to watch it in the city... It ran in some village for 100 days and was removed... Dunno when the directors and producers will understand this and give chance to new talented directors and actors... Movies like Myna in Kannada are so good, but no on watches them...

Comparing Amitabh, for that matter any actor in India with Raj Kumar is not right. Hindi has a wider audience, so Amitabh's fame and earnings will be more than Raj Kumar. But nobody can beat Raj in success rate. Even after 40 years of his debut, a movie acted by Raj Kumar had a guarantee of running for 100 days in theatres. He had such loyal fan base. No one can match that. Yes, Kannada industry is not popular like Hindi. But that will not make Amitabh superior. Bradman did not make as much money as Sachin. So?
